1930年、日本の植民地統治時代に、台湾総督府が設立したハンセン病患者収容施設「楽生院」をめぐる映像作品。初上映は4つの章を療養院の屋外4箇所で上映し、観客が楽生療養院の敷地を歩きまわり患者とともに作品を鑑賞する、一種の社会関与型アート・プロジェクトとしても大きな話題を呼んだ。今回上映されるのは、4つの章をひとつにまとめたシングルスクリーンバージョンとなる。レクチャーパフォーマンスの前に鑑賞するか後に鑑賞するかは観客の判断に委ねられる。

This film examines Losheng (“happy life”) Sanatorium, which was established as an isolation hospital for Hansen’s disease (leprosy) patients in 1930, when Taiwan was a colony of Japan. The first screening saw the four parts of the film projected in four places outdoors at the actual sanatorium, with the result that audiences walked through the grounds alongside the present-day patients. Functioning not just as a film but also as a socially engaged art project, it attracted widespread attention and acclaim. This single-screen showing of the work in Tokyo can be experienced as a standalone film installation, but also offers a valuable opportunity for audiences to learn more about the background to the accompanying lecture performance.

陳界仁  チェン・ジエレン

1960年台湾生まれ。台湾を代表する映像作家、アーティスト。80年代の冷戦・戒厳令政権下の台湾で、当時の政治体制を挑発するようなゲリラスタイルのパフォーマンスや展覧会活動を展開。戒厳令解除後は数年間の沈黙期間を経て1996年より創作活動を再開、主に映像と写真を用いた作品を制作している。現代社会が抱える問題を、実在する場所や人物をリアルに撮影しつつ、フィクションとして制作する。また、実際の社会問題に対してアクションを起こすプロセスを作品に組み入れるなど、その活動は芸術活動にとどまらない。ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ（1999年及び2000年）、光州ビエンナーレ（2000年、特別賞受賞）、上海ビエンナーレ（2014年）など国際展に多数参加。主な個展はクイーンズ美術館（2008年）、台北市立美術館（2010年）など。台北在住。

 

 

Chen Chieh-jen

Born in 1960, Chen Chieh-jen is one of Taiwan’s most prominent video and visual artists. During the repressive Cold War period of martial law in Taiwan during the 1980’s, he created provocative guerrilla-style performances and exhibitions. Following an artistic hiatus following the end of martial law, he resumed his creative activities in 1996, working mainly with video art and photography. His work deals with social issues and actual places and people, which he films and presents as fiction. He also integrates the process of action towards social problems into his artworks. Today based in Taipei, his work was presented at the Venice Biennale in 1999 and 2000, the Gwangju Biennale in 2000 (Special Award), and the Shanghai Biennale in 2014. His major solo exhibitions include at the Queens Museum of Art in 2008 and Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 2010.

台湾アート界の先駆者、チェン・ジエレン（陳界仁）。大文字の歴史や社会が取りこぼす現実にカメラを向け、壮大で静謐な映像フィクションに昇華させる手腕と長年の取組は、国内外で多くの尊敬と注目を集め続けている。

本作品は、最新映像インスタレーション『残響世界』（2014）に自らの創作理念を交えながら、レクチャーパフォーマンスとして新たに発展させるもの。ハンセン病患者収容施設「楽生院（のちに楽生療養院と改称）」をめぐる個人の物語に、日本と台湾両国の歴史を重ね、現代の社会問題へと静かに斬り込む。歴史上の題材を過去だけではなく、現在そして未来に続く問いとして捉えるチェン。その眼差しは、「不潔者」とされたハンセン病患者だけでなく、政治に異議を唱えて「不穏者」とされ排除された人々にも向けられる。今回、日本での上演のために創作されるチェンの語りと映像は、私たちにどんな揺さぶりをかけるのだろうか。

Taiwanese art pioneer Chen Chieh-jen turns his camera lens to history and overlooked aspects of society. His epic yet serene films have attracted great acclaim all over the world.

This performance is based on his most recent video installation, Realm of Reverberations (2014), adapted here into a new lecture performance. It focuses on the stories of patients at Losheng (“happy life”) Sanatorium, an isolation hospital for Hansen’s disease (leprosy) patients dating back to the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan. Drawing on this shared history between Japan and Taiwan, Realm of Reverberations cuts quietly into the implications the institution has for contemporary society. Chen’s gaze turns not only to the patients designated as “unclean” but also to people ostracized as political dissenters. This Japan staging has been especially redeveloped as a fusion of lecture and video.
